Letter Carving in Stone / Masonry Skills / Welding
Following the Introductory Presentation on Safety and a Demonstration:
students in the LETTER CARVING CLASS will be shown the basics of hand carving v-cut letters in stone. Starting from carving simple lines, students will progress to carving full letters or numbers by the completion of the workshop. We recommend that students bring a project idea to focus on such as an address marker, a house sign, or a chosen word. Stone and tools will be provided for use during the workshop. Additional stone, lettering chisels, and hammers will also be available for purchase on site.
TIM LEHMANN a professional stone carver and sculptor based outside of Taos, New Mexico. He specializes in hand-carved pieces, incorporating a range of styles and forms; from relief to statuary, contemporary to classical, and realist to abstract. Tim has worked on public and private projects, including everything from small limestone statuettes to large-scale granite installations.
students in the MASONRY SKILLS CLASS will work together on a short flagstone pathway and a low stone wall, such that preparing the foundation, readying the materials, and using tools, can be covered. This class will give students a foundation in how to do basic projects in stone.
PETRO HUL finds that nature, specifically the raw geology of the Southwest's canyon country, has a great influence on my sculpture. Hiking and exploring in this environment is both inspiring and humbling, generating idea after idea. He has worked with stone for four decades.
students in the WELDING CLASS will learn about safety, welding helmets, the different types of welding and equipment, and will have ample time to practice in pairs making a weld (watching and doing in turns) - followed by work on the class project in which everyone will make their own custom kindling box / tool box to take home. All supplies are provided, but bring your own welding helmet, welding gloves, and/or welding machine if you have them.
FRANCESCA LUGO is a sculpture artist living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Francesca studied sculpture at the University of Colorado Boulder and the intrigue of being able to build large scale sculptures led her to pursue an education in welding at the Community College of Denver. Francesca worked in public art fabrication studios for 5 years, last as the lead welder at Flowcus under the direction of Joshua Wiener. Francesca's experience spans from welding various types of metals and using diverse methods from 20’ tall metal sculptures installed all over the country to pedestals for stone countertops installed in your kitchen. Francesca currently works primarily in metal and stone. Francesca has a love of art and practical skill and is passionate about teaching others how to weld.
Please bring your own water and lunch. We’ll have coffee and snacks each morning. Wear closed toed shoes, and bring gloves, safety glasses, and any other tools you may have.
MINI WORKSHOPS run from 10am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday.
This mini-workshop project is supported in part by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts through a grant to The Rio Grande Rift Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting hands-on learning in the real world.
